iam finally having these wiring problems that i have only heard aboat till now . just wondering if any one else has heard of this . the fuel pump will only run when the key is all the way in the start position. so the car will just start and die. but if i use the cluch pedle to activate the starter and then when its running keep the key in the start position the car will stay running untill i let it back to the regular on poss and it will die. i just replaced the ignition swich and that did not change any thing. any help would be great thanks.
did it do this before you changed the ignition switch??? sounds like you are off one notch on the igition switch when i replaced the one in my jeep i had same problem the rod that goes from the key to the ignition switch was not in the right notch making the same problem you had

yesterday is history tomorrow is a mystery
There are two ignition circuits in the car. The primary circuit, that runs the car, goes from the key switch through the resistance wire to the coil, to provide a constant 7V. The start ignition is provided via the "I" terminal in the starter solenoid, and routes directly to the coil, to provide a full 12V to the coil, only during starting. You need to turn the ignition "ON", and work your way through the circuit toward the key switch to find the problem.
turn key to the on position and check for voltage at the coil.
If you don't run a jumper wire from your battery directly to the coil and see if it will stay running (don't leave this to long you can overheat your coil 5-10 min max)
if this solve you problems it wirebetween the switch and the coil
you can also make check the wiring harness at the fire wall were it plugs in. disconnect it make sure all contacts are clean inside , use electrical grease and reconnect it
thanks for all the input guys i found a bad main ground the one that looks like a antenna plug it was not connected inside. i guess somtimes its the easyest things. iam going to shrink wrap butt connect it that shuld assure it dosent happen again.
well when a changed the mass air harness i noticed that connection sucked but i guess i will have to drive and see just got to get aftermarket gauges in her. o by the way hey john i got another 1989 cluster and that dose not work either iam wondering if it needs a 90 to work what cluster dose that car need a 90 or 89 i dond no how to tell the diff.
it has a tilt column so i put a cluster from and 88 i belive..i bought it off of tim who said it came outof mike heaths car and said everything worked.
i have two of thos white face gauges now cause i bought another one cause i thoght that one was junk but i gues its the harnes. so i will sell one of them when i fix the harness just so i no they both work. i will sell for 85 thats what i paid. as for the wheels iam not selling they make that car look way to sweet.
thanks every one for all the input and help the wiring issue was just the bad main ground and tonight i found cluster issues the wires in the main harness were cut that went to gauges so i reconected and there good . exsept fuel gauge but that i can deal with out for now.
