drop in air filter

what do you guys use for air filters... i no most people have CAI in their stangs but im doing the 30k service on my f150 and i dont want to give ford 40 bucks for a paper filter... autozone has K&N drop ins ofr 50 bucks but i hear they dont filter well enough-- especially for a truck... also i hear STP and some other brands of paper filters are junk?

i just want it to fitler well so i can keep as much dirt out of the engine as possible... long life... not looking for performance gains or anything.. what brands do you guys use-- and paper or washable?

i think they will just blame as much as they can on the aftermarket shit if something were to go wrong... not really worth the hassle... i no exhaust isnt covered anyways so thats what ill do when i get some money but i dont really want togive ford 40 bucks for an air filter...

better yet, they charge like 70 bucks to put it in... undo two clips and slide it in... the 30k service is rediculous, and it doesnt even cover all the shit in the manuel... that would be over 1000 bucks at ford prices to inspect a bunch of bs, change the oil change the tranny fluid the axles the air and fuel filters is over a grand...

but even buying parts fro them to do it yourself is rediculous... i think wal mart carries them though

if i was you id just buy all the stuff at autozone or advanced and do it your self they sell motocraft oil and filters there cheaper than the dealer and just do it your self and on a side note have you had any issues with the truck

yea i think wal mart sells het ford stuff didnt no if autozone did though

only problem i had was with the tranny... it would feel like it was slipping when i was going constant like 25-35 mph and even when my foot was off the gas coasting it would just like blurp up to about 2k rpm... i googled it and there was a TSB on it and it seems to have been fine since, but i only figured out there was a TSB about 3k ago.... not that thats the dealerships job or anything to run the VIN for me when its there getting inspected or when i bought out the lease...

battery kinda sucks in the cold... starting to get some surface rust or discoloration on the frame that i didnt really expect considering im under about once every 3 times i drive it (im at college i dont use it much during the semester) spraying the undercarrige... but it could also just be the coating starting to wear off not sure... is yours?

rust os one thing im really concerned about cuz of my 96

have you had any problems?

im sure its just the factory under coating wearing off im not to excited about the frame design since its all boxed like the toyotas and there junk but im gona oil my frame this summer and the only issue i have is my 4x4 hubs and the vaccume system they release the hubs sometimes and they grind wicked loud then i flip the 4x4 on then off and it stops for awhile the dealer wont fix it cause it wont do it when its there sucks but i still love the truck and im happy with it mine a stx 4x4 extra cab with a 4.6

and in my opion the 90s style truck are still the best there just old and used up now my 95 had 276k miles it still ran mint and towed my trailer just as good as my 08 and would boil the tires off better than my 08 will lol

id be pissed they wont fix it... do you get good mileage from the 4.6? i get about 16.5 average from the 5.4... im not too impressed with it compared to other trucks power wise but it still hauls more and at least i know its been around a while i guess.. i think the 4.6 makes basically the same power... is yours an auto?

what do you oil the frame with? i was spraying tire black on the frame in the wheel well in the summer last year so shit would wash right off... how long does the oil last?

i heard the boxed frame was good... i thought the problem with the toyota was that its just not thick enough gauge?

i think im a little paranoid about the rust on the frame though i get under there and spray once a week and monitor everything haha but i dont want it to end up like my 96...

boxed frames hold salt and water in them and cant be coated on the insde and the frames on these trucks isnt thick at all i redid like 10 toyota frames at the shop and i could see these being the same way i hope not i average 18-19 mpg and if im on the highway alot ive gotten as good as 22mpg power wise the 5.4 is alot better but my truck will tow most anything my buddy titain will smoke my truck and my buddies 5.4 but the titain is the worst truck for towing ive ever used and the frame will last alot longer if you oil it every year it messy and a pain in the ass just spray waste oil every where you can in the frame on the out side it just dont wash it off it will make the water bead off keep the frame protected the last frame i did was a 2001 chevy it was rotted under the cab where its boxed so i dont know they use so much salt but my next truck will be a southern 97 or older 7.3 powerstroke f350

i never thoguht of it not getting treatedon the inside cuz i thought the two peices were welded together after it is treated but then it wouldnt cover the welds so yea i never thought of that... damn haha cant keep it forever... ill run a hose into the frame lol

so just oil it then dont spray it to clean it off?

what else do you reccommend for a 30k service... the dealer says a bunch of inspections... oil, fuel filter and air filter (both first time replacements) and rotate tires... they want 460$ for that, then the manual also says tranny flush and axle fluids... dealership wants 260 for tranny without the filter and 160 per axle... i was going to do it all myself...

do you no if not using ford fluids will void warranty? and anythng else i should do? also on the rear diff i heard theres no drain plug so you jsut take the cover off to drain?

ill probably get the oil change done for hte 50 bucks cuz it includes a chassis lube (that includes ball joints and stuff right?) and a 'multi point inspection' that i feel like if something breaks they will try to blame me for not having done

id recomend you drop the tranny pan do a filter and fluid do the rear gear oil the front should be fine since it doesnt spin all the time and its not a trac lock i would recomend useing all motocraft oils and tranny fleids tho and make sure you put the posi additive in the rear if i was you id also do plugs since 5.4 3 valves have a bad rep for plug issues they freeze in the head and can be a very exspensive fix that actually one of the reasons why i went with the 4.6 and you could paint the out side of the frame with chassis saver from dupont and then just spray the inside of the frame with oil if your worried about it and the ball joints arent greeseable from the factory so they could lube them and the tierods are the same you could change the oil and just check the frontend while its up your call i know like 5 guys with 5.4 f150s so if you have any conserns i could probly help ya out

i think ill do it once it gets a little warmer out as far as fluids and stuff goes... hopefully autozone has decent prices on motorcroft stuff... thanks for the help

loved my 2005 f150 5.4 4x4 but when they reach 100,000 miles they need timing chains, quides, cam phasers and all that other crap ford wanted like $2500 to do it and it sounded like a rod knock at idle so i sold it yesterday

5.4s are known for cam phasers another reson i got a 4.6 but my buddies truck lasted 160k miles before his needed chain tensioners but he lost overdrive at 95k miles actuallly everyone i know with 05+ 5.4 trucks have lost overdrive before 120k another reason i got a 4.6 my buddies service truck is a 4.6 with 190k and has done nothing major to it and it still drives like new but all my buddies with 5.4 trucks love them enough to put up with it lol

well hopefully if anything/ everything goes its before 100k cuz i have a 7 year 100k warranty haha

i dont plan on keeping it that long... i had it for a 2 year lease and bought it out for a great price after the end of the lease (plus i was over more than 10k miles which i would have owed for)

so i bought it over 5 years, and the warranty covers me through that but i only did it that long so i could use it as a selling point, or get it back pro rated.... they gave it to me so why not haha

but im out of school in 3 years, so i figure soon after that ill get rid of it... or just keep it forever haha... but i paid less than the trade in value on it when i bought it out, and i was looking at the trend of used f150 prices online and it seems like ill never be upside down in the loan, so im not too worried about getting rid of it if i had too

how do you no if timing chains need to be replaced?

Dad has quite a few trucks at the fence co ranging from '78-'10...We've always coated the frames with used motor oil, using a garden sprayer..god only knows how effective it is really, could be an old wives tale but a lot of the trucks we still use now were sea-mossing rigs, on the beach daily in scituate, plymouth etc

oiling the frames is messy but it does work one of our customers oils the frame on his 77 f150 every year since 1985 plows with it every storm the frame is still mint the bodys patched up but the frame is super clean its a 300 l6 with a 4 speed it has 398k miles still runs and is driven at least once a week its not a daily driver anymore but origanal motor and tranny and still plow like 4 or 5 huge driveways every storm now thats when a truck was a truck

so you just spray it with oil then never wash the under carridge?

i live near the water theres a lot of salt... wouldnt it just stick to the frame?

clean the frame real good then id start by pouring it in the frame then just soak everything you can with oil dont wash it off oil it every year before winter once iit soaks into the under coating it will stay there and it makes the water bead off the frame and salt wont stick you could even do it a couple times the first year so it has a good base i was also told you can mix it with grease to thickin it uop so it sticks evenb better but that seem alot messier id just stick with straight waste oil

just keep it clean and dont worry about it youll be fine for awhile oiling the frame is messy and on a nice truck you may just be better off oiling the inside then painting the out side so it looks nicer

check your air filter, if its dirty, you need one
the fuel filter, check that yourself. if you see green around where the tube attaches to the filter, you need a new one.
no that doesnt void the warranty by using non ford fluids
the chassis lube does include ball joints and stuff, but sometimes they dont have grease fittings on them.
you can check your tranny fluid yourself too, if its dark you could go for the change, if not dont bother.
the tires, also check out yourself, uneven wear on the outsides of the tread could be an alignment problem, tie rod or ball joint problem. id say do a rotation at 30k, sounds about right cuz usually a set of tires will last 50k so having them rotated at 30k sounds right.

oh and the whole spark plug thing. they do freeze sometimes in the 5.4 3v. they dont freeze in the 5.4 2v, just did mine the other day in my 97 expedition. have the plugs done at around 50k just for the peace of mind because if they freeze in there and snap trying to take them out at 75k or 100k and break its gonna be costly to have it fixed....ACTUALLY, i have heard of ford dealers not warranting because of aftermarket air filters so be careful with what you do, if i was you id buy the whole cold air kit if you were going to do anything at all. i dont think a drop in filter does any better than a factory one, and for the 20 bucks for the kit to clean a k&n once or twice you could just buy the factory one for like $33..i think thats what they cost.

x2 ive seen people think they blow there motor when a 2v motor throws up a plug and just my 2 cents its worth changing the rear diff fluid cause it a trac loc with clutches and it wont hurt it to do a tranny filter and fluid i always do my at 30k miles and i change my oil every 3k but it says you can go 5k up to you your not gona hurt anything over servicing it and factory the ball jhoints dont have grease fitting neither do the tierod ends and if it needs ball joints or tierods at 30k miles theres something wrong smashfreakB

yea i plan on doing the rear axle fluid i think... and tranny flush... and the factory air filter... definitely gonna have the dealer do spark plugs incase i break something so i dont have to ahve it towed haha

fuel filter hard to do? just unclip the lines and slide in a new filter right? maybe fill the filter with a little gas before putting it in so theres no air bubble?

i do my oil at like 5k usually, never more than 7500 if im driving a lot

im on spring break next week... great way to spend vacation 30k service haha... if i were to paint the frame too, you guys think just scuffing it up with an abrasive pad is enough? or shouldi wait to do that until the factory undercoat wears off?

to be completely honest id be surprised if the tranny lasts 150k its up to you what you want to do atleast check it all out im a machanic so im alittle crazy aboput servicing my stuff and i have a lift so its easy and i use my truck for towing alot and i beat on it alot more than i should lol so i do everything more than called for i never go more than 3000 with out changing my oil even tho it says 5000 in the book and ill change my tranny fluid at 30k but that me and my ocd haha
