I am about to tear down an 8.8, my first time. I know the basics but then again I have not even started doing research on it. I am going to change the gear set to 373s and am not sure what to do about the posi unit, rebuild the stock or buy new. The car is going to be street driven aprox. 300-350 hp, not a straight up drag car. So I am not going to do a locker. Any info or direction is greatly appreciated-Joe
I pushed 520 rwhp through a stock track lock with 390 gears . When I had the gears installed I also had them install new bearings and had the track lock rebuilt with one or two additional clutches . It never missed a beat . I just new my limitations with it . I never ran full slicks or did 5grand clutch drops with drag radials . This was the stock 28 spline axles too. A cheap upgrade would be a 31 spline track lock . You can find these in stock bronco's and f150's or a new one is around 200. bucks . This way you can add the 31 spline axles for extra strength . Mark7Kevin is the man when it comes to rebuilding 8.8's . Give him a PM . He has all the ford set up tools for a fool proof install . He is very reasonable and will do it right the first time . Sure you could do it yourself but if it's not right then you will be doing it again . He does not mind people watching so you could maybe learn alittle from him aswell .
that would be your best move!! kevin is the man when it comes to rearends lol .. really tho .. he completely rebuilt mine.. i bought a complete install kit, new trac loc, all new bearings, and 373's and i couldnt be happier!! Make sure you buy a Ford Racing gearset too!!! he'll prob be the only other person that will ever touch my car besides myself!!!
