HELP!!! 2V TIMING CHAIN TENSIONERS??????

2000 GT 4.6 SOHC WINDSOR 96,000 miles. Ive run nothing but mobile 1 since 54K.

Ive been hearing a noise for some time now ONLY WHEN THE ENGINE IS COLD. It started off light but is now getting worse (louder)!! Once the car warms up it goes away but i did notice it once at the track after about 8-10 runs when it was warmed up (i was beating it pretty good) it started doing it and went away shortly after!

It almost sounds like a lower bearing noise but im almost certain that its not a bearing.
These motors are know for tensioners arent they??

If so should i replace the chains too??

I planed on doing atleast the tensioners and guids.

What do you guys think?

I need to sort this out before the blower goes on because I cant afford another engine at the moment!! Oh and im only going to run 7psi intercooled because of the miles on the car.

If your going to replace the tensioners and guide you should definitely replace the chain to.
it only makes sense since you'll have it all torn apart anywhere. especially since your going to put a blower on it

that's just my opinion

piston slap is when the engine is real cold the pistons actually shrink giving them to much clearance. then when your engine warms up they expand to proper size the noise will go away but that only in certain engines built at certain plants

do a google search on ford 4.6l piston slap and you will find all hinds of info on it

i know the 3v motors are known for cam phasers timing chain tensioners and quides all at about 100,000 the motor kinda sounds like a diesel and it will get louder until replaced

not sure how the 2v and 3v differ

so i did a google search on PISTON SLAP and it doesnt really sound like thats my problem.
It sounds more like what snakebite is describing. It prob is the guides and tensioners and it only does it for like the first 5 maybe 10 min of driving when the engine is COLD at certain throttle positions and RPMs.

A bad bearing would make the noise ALL the time wouldnt it??

I just dont want to waste the time or money if the motor needs to be replaced and im DEF not going to put my procharger on it if the motor isnt right!

Ive been looking into the 5.4 sohc swap. It seems like an easy swap and about the same cost as replacing the stock 4.6 or maybe alittle more.

does anyone have any info/experience on this? I know the 4.6 DOHC would be a better swap but ALOT more money!

Thanks for all the input guys!

shane i had the same issue and it was solved by just replacing the guides themselves and not have to replace the tensioners
