so my buddy (timbo8650) has a 86 gt that is converted to mass air. The other day the car was running fine, we pulled into a store and when he got back in and tried to fire her up, nothing happened. It acted like the battery was dead as it would not crank at all. All you could hear was a click of a solinoid (sp?). It happened about a month ago and we found that there was a bad ground off the battery to the motor. We replaced the ground wire and grounded it to a different location and it has been fine since. But the same thing happened again so now we are stumped. Anyone have any suggestions?
My old 86 used to do that all the time...id wait alittle while and tap on my solonoid and it would fire back up.....did the car start back uf for you guys so you could make it home? If it did i would start by replacing the solonoid because it like a 10$ part.
yea we had to pop start it but it fired right up. i used a multimeter tonight tho and found out i had a bad connection at the battery. the wires were pretty corroded but i cut a few inches off and its all set now. im gonna replace both wires tomorrow.
Put a 93 or later starter in it. I had that happen to me a couple of years ago. The starter got hot and wouldn't crank it over. The 93 and newer starters are smaller and higher torque.
Sounds like a solonoid to me.. I too had the same problem earlier this week. The ground wire was touching that little metal stud on the bottom from the solonoid preventing it from starting.. I even cleaned the connectors and then it fired right back up.. Hope that helps.
