Cost is all relative to what you're going to want to do with it. If it's a stock rebuild, it'll be less expensive than a modified rebuild. Some guys just put new bearings, rings, valve seals and gaskets. Other people bore and hone the block, and have a complete valve job done in addition to the aforementioned parts. Again, it's all relative to what you want.
Your best bet would be to figure out what you want and then call around to get pricing.
haha yeah..eric i say you take it off the road, pull the motor, have it rebuilt to what you want, total should be maybe 3500 with some upgrades, and have the car stripped and painted. take your time and dont rush it. its a tired 5.0, do it right the first time.

Now thats a plan.
There ya go !!! That will be a 10,000 $ investment easy ... and the car will be worth 6,000. $ when your done !! Umm.. sounds like a loosing plan to me .... These cars are just not worth alot of money even modified . You could dump thousands to get it just the way you want and be lucky to get half your money back when it's time to sell . Ask yourself how much your money means to you and how much your willing to loose . I've made 300 rwhp with a used explorer engine with a trickflow intake , B-cam, 24# injectors and the usual exhaust and engine boltons . I did have some work done to the stock GT40 heads ... Milled the heads .020 " gasket matched the exhaust and intake ports , and a complete valve job with better springs and stainless valves . I paid 500 for the engine and 200 for the intake , 150 for the injectors, 150. for the cam , 800 . for the head work . There was alot of other stuff too. All in all it would still cost ya close to 2,000. when done . You would save 1,500.00 by not rebuilding the short block . That could be put towards your paint !! Now you have your ( 300 rwhp ) and the car is painted for the cost of just a rebuilt engine !!
