130 Amp Alternator? UDP's and Subs....

So my question is will i need a better alternator now that I have under drive pullies? its a 94 5.0 motor, cobra upper/lower, gt40 heads, b303, 24lb injectors, 93 cobra mass air, msd6al, a/c delete, smog delete. I run subs in my car since its my daily driver. I never really had a problem other than dimming of headlights however my car was supercharged then and now is not so that takes alot of load off the motor.

My subs are 2 10" MTX, with a 800watt amp... Im wondering if I need a 130 amp alternator due to my new underdrive pullies, but I have heard that putting one in these fox's could burn up the wiring harness and start a fire.

What do you guys think I should do because I love music with subs, but I dont want to be drawing too much...

you think I would be fine with just a cap then? Where could I get one? How do they wire in? Will it prevent my lights from dimming?

yes it will stop lights from dimming
bestbuy, circuit city or ebay
ebay is the cheapest way
get atleast 1 faruad
goes inline with the power wire

Put an ASP overdrive pulley on the alternator. It will speed it up to compensate for the reduction in assessory drive belt speed.

i had a 2.0 farad cap in my fox with 2 12" bumping through a 2000w rockford amp and it would basicaly shut the lights off if it was loud enough.

that was with an upgraded 100amp alt with stock pullies.

it never really bothered me but i did end up taking the system out...

1. Stock 2G Alternators are adequate at best in a stock fuel injected Mustang.

2. A properly wired 3G alternator will not cause a fire just do it right!

3. Capacitors only help to fill large spikes in power consumption.

I had the same situation in my car when it was basically stock but I dont remember what I did first. I had UDP's and subs, then got a cap and a 200amp alternator. I think i got rid of the cap cause it didnt do shit. That system was kinda weak compared to what I have now, so when I rewire I will get a bigger cap. and still run my 200amp alt. I also ditched the udp's , and that helped a good amount.
I dont know if 130 is even enough amperage if you are running a semi-serious system. Some people run multiple alt's for serious performance. If you are going to upgrade you might as well go big, just so you dont have to upgrade again. Check out PAperformance alternators.

What kind of battery do you have and how old is it ? I put a mild system in my daughters 97 mustang . It's a V-6 with the 130 amp. stock alt. and a Optima red top battery. I installed a kenwood 1200 watt excellion 5 channel amp, 12" rockford fosgate sub and all polk audio speakers . The system pounds and does not dim the headlights .. even at idle !
My advice would be to keep the pullies , but use a good battery like an optima . If you still have problems ..then upgrade to the 130 amp .

I just got a new battery, I forget what kind but it cost me almost 200... My old battery kept dying due to drawing too much from it with my system and ignition so my mechanic at the time got a me a good one... Im at work other wise Id go pop the hood.

My car was supercharged before but now is not so that takes a lot of load off, however I didnt have UDP then and do now. I may be fine as it is now, I just want to have a solution ready for spring when I re-wire my system back in just in case it causes a problem.

A 1 Farad Cap is useless other than for helping with keeping your lights from dimming. Like everyone else said i would just upgrade the alternator, you can use ohms law to figure out if you really need to.

i run a 130 alternator in my car, never had any problems. It's been in there for over two years. I'm pretty sure 94+ 5.0s came with 130 amp alts, but I could be wrong. I've got some subs and an amp for sale too if anyones interested let me know.

So I can just get a 94-95 SN95 alt?

My system isnt anything extreme... Its 2 mtx 10's and a 800 watt amp...

What the hell is a Farad? And what is the difference between a 1 Farad cap and a 1.6 or higher Farad cap that I am finding on Ebay?

A farad is a measurement of capacitance named after Michael Faraday. Capacitance is basically is the amount of electrical charge stored.

So your example: A 1.6 Farad Cap has the ability to store more electrical charge than a 1.0Farad Cap

Would a 1.0 Farad cap be sufficient for me?
