buy/borrow Timing Pointer for 86GT ASAP for meet on SUNDAY!!

Does anyone have a timing pointer for an 86 GT 5.0?? My buddy's motor doesnt have one and he has been driving it timed by ear only for a couple years now. Well Im trying to get him to drive sunday for the meet so I can go finally and he said he'll go if he can get his car timed...

Recently its acting like its flooding. If hes at a constant throttle for a while it will start bogging down and he will have to shut off and start it again and it generally clears up. We think its the timing.... Anyone else have any imput??

Also if someone could just let him borrow the pointer or even time the car real quick that would be AWSOME!

If possible, reply quick cuz the meet is on sunday... clock is ticking so if anyone can help please do!

Thanks - Jay

Make one. Find TDC and make a mark on the balancer and the front cover. Then just use that to time it.

How do you find top dead center? And how do you know where to make the mark?

Its a very simple procedure really. Start with removing the number one spark plug(passenger side front cylinder). Next you will need a friend or a remote starter. Now this is where I tell you to use some common sense. Place your thumb over the spark plug hole and "bump" the starter. Refrain from sticking anything into the cylinder. As you bump the starter you will feel pressure from the Compression stroke. You now can align the timing marks on the harmonic balancer to 0 TDC. Finally set the rotor about 1/4 to 1/5 of a turn before number one on the cap and drop it in you might have to do this a few times to get it to line up.If you do miss the correct position you should be able to lift the distributor up enough to feel the teeth disengage and move one tooth at a time to find the right position. One more note make sure the distributor is FULLY seated before you install the clamp. if it sticks up around a 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch it has not engaged the the oil pump drive shaft. If it will not drop all the way put the cap on and while pushing down gently bump the starterit should drop in prety easily though if the everything is back where it was when you pulled the distributor out. I'm sorry this is so long winded. I hope this helps you. GOOD LUCK!

you could turn the engine by hand. when cold turn the fan blades til you see the timming number marks on the pointer.
with a flashlight you could peek in the plug hole and see the piston. i have done this personaly it worked

You can buy a piston stop. They are about $5. You screw it in to #1 plug hole and turn the crank with a 15/16" socket on the crank bolt. DO NOT use the starter to turn the engine. Turn it till it hits the stop. Make a small mark in the front cover at the 0 deg mark on the balancer. Then turn the crank the other direction and make another small mark at the 0 deg mark of the balancer. If it is at the same mark but I don't think it will be unless you get lucky. That is TDC. Measure the distance between the two marks. Half the the distance is TDC. Make a big mark. It doesn't matter if you at on the compression stroke or not TDC is TDC. You don't have to pull you distributor out unless it is off a tooth when you put it in. If you want drive to my house early Sunday morning and I will time the car. I will take the pointer off one of my cars and time it. PM me I will give you my address
