Would be a waste if that's all you're going to do. The ricers wouldn't know what they were listening to anyways. Just do bolt-ons and exhaust etc.

Valve springs , hardened pushrods, and I'd buy lifters too . They are cheap money and a fresh set of lifters is a good idea with a higher lift cam . Might want to invest in a set of 1.6 roller rockers . They won't flex like the stock stamped ones . You will need pedestal mount rockers for you stock E7 heads . If you don't have an aftermarket intake .... it would be a good idea too. That way you can take advantage of the new cam . You can find them used for reasonable money .

You'd be better off keeping the stock cam and going with a set of GT-40P heads and another intake if you are gonna spend that much.

Mike ... I hope you at least changed the stock springs . They are only rated for a .420 lift cam . They will never hold up to a bigger cam and a blower ..like your set up . I know this because i destroyed a set of stock springs with just a B- cam on a set of stock GT40 explorer heads . Never mind with a blower .

Why would that be ? The stock springs on the explorer P heads are junk .. So they will have to changed anyway !! Pushrods, rockers , and lifters are something that really should be done when going with a more agressive cam . Plus the stock cam sounds ...Well Stock !! It also only makes power to 4500 . After that it will rev ... But thats it .
He could just slap the F-cam in and thats it ... Ya it will run , but for how long ? The stuff I advised him to get will up his budget , but will assure that his engine makes power and lives !! Remember horse power costs money !! ... How much do you want to make ?

I suggest talking to a machine shop and asking how much to change valve springs . If your going this way I would ask about gasket matching the ports on the heads and milling them .020 for more compression . The machine shop will know what springs to use for your set up . All in all I'm thinking around 5 to 600 for this work to be done . Then you will need head gaskets and bolts . You could easily drop around a "G" by the time it's said and done . That would be for head work , gaskets, lifters , cam , pushrods, rockers , timing chain , head bolts , and fluids . Plus this is doing it yourself !!

Unless you have your heart set on the F-cam ... I would think about an E-cam or B-cam . Then you could leave your springs and heads alone . You could also re-use your original lifters ..if they are in good shape and don't make any noise now . You would just need a new timing chain and some gaskets . Plus an aftermarket intake would help make some more ponies and look better too . You could do all this for less than half of what it could cost you to go the other way .

Everyone has opinions. I have been through it all already so, take it with a grain of salt. The springs on P heads do suck, but are fine for a stock cam. What's wrong with stock lifters? No need for new pushrods with a stock cam/springs, if geometry is right, which is most likely will be. Slap an F cam in and he pretty much loses bottom end and has stock heads that can't flow for top end.

Heads ~$200 (try to get them decked already for more CR)
Headers ~$100
Plus gaskets. Done. Power Idle-5000 RPM. Easy 20+ HP
Then add intake. Stockers flow like shit.
Then add cam or 1.7 RR's

Fcam ~$90
Springs ~$100
Timing chain ~$50
Plus gaskets. Power >2500-5000 RPM with about 15+ HP maybe? But you'll have a choppy idle, woohoo!

Yes, I have done both. So I know what to expect. I've owned the same car for >13 years.

Just opened a whole new can of worms with that post, LOL. All the guy wants is better sound and a little more power for cheap.
