So on my way to FFW on Friday, I got on the highway and the car started to misfire. (Sooooo pissed but what can you do.) I turned back around and brought it back home. The check engine light came on so I took out my code reader and checked the codes. The only code that was in the computer was 14. I looked it up and it says the that signal from the profile ignition pickup is intermittent to the computer. I have been seeing this code for a while now. When I first started seeing it in the beginning of the summer I asked around and some people told me that the ignition control module can cause this to happen sometimes, so I bought a new one, but the code still came up. So then I just bought a reman distributor figuring that it actually was the profile ignition pickup inside the distributor but I was still seeing the code. Since the car was running fine even with the code coming up and me running out of money to fix things I decided to just leave it for now.
The cap, rotor, and spark plugs, are all new, I bought them in May. The wires are about a year old. I checked to make sure all the wires were tight and connected, and looked to see if there was anything wrong with the cap and rotor and they all look good.
The one thing I noticed when the car would misfire was that both my tacs, the stock one and the monster tac, would drop like 1000 rpms. I am not sure if that is a normal thing to happen when the car misfires because this is the first time it is happed to me with this car. I have a MSD box in the car and I am wondering if there is something wrong with that which is causing the problem.
My car was doing something similar to me in the past. Put a new TPS, IAC, EGR and fuel filter and it was still happening. So I tryed cleaning the mass air and it cleared up for maybe an hour. Ended up being my MSD6al box had shit the bed. Bought a new one and it was fine ever since. I dont know if there is some way to check the box, but if there is, I would start there. Hope I could help a little. good luck
I believe so, My mechanic Jerry Brookes at speedway garage here in worceseter does all my motor work, and he ended up finding out it was the msd after i spent like 600 just throwing parts at it... Im not 100% on what code it was throwing though - Jay
Thanks Jay, I think I am going to take the car to my mechanic also to see if he can figure it out because I am sick of wasting money. I wanted to post something up to see if anyone had any thoughts.
same happened to me..turned out the ignition coil was bad..car idled fine just stalled and tended to "buck" wen drivin.. changed the coil and everything was back to normal and better than usual
No not yet, I am still gathering up some money to send it to the mechanic. It should be going there by the beginning of Sept. It is killing me that I can't drive it with the nice weather we are having. I will post the resolution as soon as I find out.
After almost a month of sitting in my garage the car if finally heading to the SD Concepts today. They finally have some room in the shop to work on the car. Hopefully it won't take them long to figure out what is wrong and I can get it back sometime next week. I can't wait it has been killing me not driving it.
Well it ended up being a bad distributor. The distributor I bought a few months ago ended up being defective, and a new one fixed everything up. I had them burn a chip for the car too which shut off alot of the emission stuff on the car (no need to worry about it anymore since it will just be a safty inspection next year). I drove the car yesterday and it was like a whole new car. It ran so smooth no problems at all. Today a new throttle body went on, the old one was sticking causing the car to idle high. After a quick tune of the TPS it was all set to go. Hopefully I can get down to RI to pick it up sometime this week, I am just glad everything is all set.
