bent pushrods, cant figure it out

anybody in here got a clue why i bent my stock pushrods, i just threw on a set of GT40 heads on my 88 GT using stock HO cam, with cobra upper and lower intake, crane cams cobra 1.7 RR's, the heads are stock valves etc, the springs are new comp cams rated for .550, i threw them on with the stock rods and bent'em. i threw in some hardened pushrods and bent those, i ordered some chromoly's in the meantime but anyone got a clue what the hell is wrong? the rockers are adjusted properly, 0 lash, then about 3 quarter turn and they were nice and snug. no valve float or clearance issues..... thanks in advance this is the project from hell

To bend pushrods there is BIND in the valvetrain. Were the springs set to the correct installed height? Do you have stud mount rockers? Is there enough travel in the rocker slot. etc. Could also be not enough piston to valve clearance. Did the pistons have the valve notches in them? 1986 short blocks don't. Don't know what year your engine is. Or simply you could possibly be over revving it. If stud mount rockers are being used go a half turn past zero lash.

springs are at the right height, they were run on a different car no problems. pedestal mount 1.7rockers the 93 cobra crane cam 1.7s. plenty of piston to valve clearance, pistons are the fly cut pistons on an 88 302 yyy block not that that matters. they all bent at idle, wasnt even revved

wat r the chances the heads are decked pretty good to bump up the compression? in that case u culd have p/v clearance issues...with the small valves in the gt40s probly not the situation, but something to think about, also u may need to shim the rockers or gett differnt length rods, stock rocker ratio is anywhere from 1.4-1.6 ratio, u added 1.7s, i wuld check all that first

As Retro said, roll the motor over by hand and watch the valve springs compress,if all the "travel" of spring is taken up,there's your culprit.

Check for the spring stacking first like Rob said. If they are ok, clay the piston and check the clearance.

IMHO unless ptv clearance is zero,it will bend valves before a pushrod.
