If you know how to shift you can make them last. High rpm slick launches or nitrous launches will hurt them fast as well as power shifting. Input shafts don't take much to break. If you are just street driving it you will probably be fine, but heavy track use may kill it fast. Bob Cosby won the NMRA factory stock class in 04 with a T5 in his 99 cobra. Car was running low 11's on car built to conform to the class rules. He got tired of T45's and ran a T5 instead. Just a real world example for you if you wanted a reference.

The 93 cobra had a T5 and it handled that motor fine.

spend the damn money and buy a tremic. I dont care how well you shift a t5 doesnt last long on the track. even if you have a stock motor. I have about 20 t5s lying around that I have pulled from these mustangs and they are all junk.

the problem could also be 95% of t5s have 150+k and are 20+ years old!

I had a T-5 in my car for 9 years. It worked just fine with too many 12 second runs and high rpm launches on E.T. Streets. Lasted 9 years with a 300 h.p. motor at the wheels. Put my 337 motor in front of it and blew up 3rd gear at 30 mph. Just stepped on it and it broke. I can't complain I got my money's worth out of it. If you don't drive them like a total moron and pound the piss out of them everytime you get behind the wheel. They will last for some time. They don't get the credit they deserve.

I've seen guys go 9.80's with the stock t-5's. Sure, a tremec is stronger and will most likely hold up better in the long run but I've always hate the way a tremec felt when shifting.

x2 .. Borgewarner rated these tranny's at 300 ftlb's of torque max. Anything beyond that is a time bomb . I've broken t-5's with stock engines . If you have ever opened one up you can see how thin and week the internals are . However as some have stated ... It's all in your driving habbits on how long a t-5 will last .. But again .. they were never rated for or intended to be put behind modified engines in stock form and will break sooner than later .
There are companys out there that can modifiy a t-5 to handle more power for racing situations , but there are better tranny's with better cases for the same money .
On a final note ... If you intend on trailering your car to the track and don't mind rebuilding one . Then it's no big deal . However if you want something more dependable ...then you might want to consider a better trans .

Depends on how you drive.

I've seen t-5's blow behind stock engines....and then t-5's handle 400HP engines no prob.

They are easy as hell to rebuild though. I just get blown ones for free and make 1 good t-5 out of them and use that. I have 3 working t-5's now for about $300 in parts total. If one blows, swap in another and rebuild the blown one.

I will have a t-56 one day though.

I'd take a T5 over the T45 or TR3650 you find in the newer mustangs. T5's are lighter, cheaper to get parts for and have a separate bellhousing which makes things so much easier. T56's are good though, nice comfy trans for the street or a road course.

The point your making about the 3650 and the t-45 is moot !! They only fit behind modular engines because the bell housings are not interchangable to fit a pushrod engine . Having said that ..the 3650 in my 02 GT that was completley stock , took a number of beatings with a supercharged engine making 400 rwhp and 390 ftlb's rwtq . I had the trans taken apart and inspected when I built the new forged engine and there was zero wear on the internals . The gears still looked new and it had 54 k on it . Not to mention all the new Gt's come with them and you don't hear of anyone breaking one as much as much as you did with the T-5 in the fox body's . As others have already said .. they have piles of broken ones they use for parts ..LOL I don't know of anyone that has piles of broken 3650 tranny's... or even just one for that matter !
I understand that the t-5 is an easy tranny to take out and rebuild . But seriuosly ... do you want to take the trans out all the time or roll the dice and wonder if your gonna make it home from the track every time you go .
Someone posted that they know of a 9 second car with a stock t-5 .... LOL !! C'mone those things can't live very long behind a stock engine ... Never mind the sick horsepower it takes to run in the 9's . It might of had a t-5 in it , but it sure wasn't stock !!

T-5s are garbage...you can argue all day on how long one will last and depends on how you drive blah blah...i drive my car all the time (when i have a license lol) and hammer on it alot...if i bust a t-5 im not gonna complain...i had a stock 91 lx hatch with 3:08 gears and went thru FOUR t-5s in 2 years...if you know you are going to have a good amount of HP and you like to beat on your car and just wanna be safe spend the money and buy a tremec

The whole key to making any T-5 live behind high horsepower cars is to lift when you shift. Also when you freshen them up you need to shim the end play where there is .002 of bearing preload. If you have any wheel hop whatsoever they will break. If it's standard I don't give a damn if it's tremec or a T-5 it will eventually break. I've been into my fair share of tremecs for broken shit. Bottom line if it's a track car you are better off in the long run to run an automatic.

I'd take the T-5 over my 3650 anyday.

Sure it's weaker, but it shifts MUCH better than the 3650 or 3550 for the matter.

I've done my research on the t5's and there is no way in hell they are cheaper to rebuild. 3rd gear alone is $500 for just the part. You break a t5 most likely it is 2nd or 3rd gear. then junk it. And I dont really know anybody that owns a mustang and doesn't beat the shit out of it.

$500 for 3rd gear?

Where are you buying them from?

The most expensive single component is the mainshaft and that's $400

The entire T-5 Z-spec 2.95 kit with 2nd, 3rd, countergear and input shaft is $400.

3rd gear from http://www.hanlonmotorsports.com/ is $85, and if you check ebay, you can get non-Tremec versions for cheaper. I rebuilt a friend's T-5 for him using the ebay gears and it's holding up fine.

You may want to find another supplier if you are paying $500 for 3rd gear. I rebuilt my T-5 and bought the complete rebuild kit from D&D and that was $150 bucks along with replacing reverse idler gear which was about $50 bucks at that time. So in my case it was cheaper to rebuild vs. buying a new one which was about $950 bucks back then...........

I agree. For a stock or lightly (300 or so RWHP) I would stick with the T-5, maybe add a steel bearing retainer. If you plan on modding your car and running slicks go with a Tremec or if you don't like how the Tremec shifts (which I really like personally) go with a G-Force. Either way, your tranny will be a weak link in your modified car. If you are not carefule and like to really drive the car hard, it will break. This is a fact.

They don't necessarily run better, but with high HP cars, it is much easier to slam down the gas with an automatic than bang through the gears with a stick. Automatics are very consistent (ET's & MPH). Maintaining control of a 500 - 600 RWHP car can be very difficult with a stick. Move up to 900 - 1,000 RWHP and you almost have to have an automatic if you want to be/stay consistent.

Autos can make it easier to get the turbo spooling up, but its not necessary. Also to they are a bit gentler on the driveline than a stick so you don't get such a hard shock to the car when you launch. They make a lot of torque and sometimes a stick just can't handle it. The MSD 2 step is becoming a popular upgrade for the turbo stick cars which helps with boost launching.

T5's are not as shitty as everyone builds them up to be I don't believe, My freind has been running nearly 700hp with a T5 for a lil while and has not broken anything and he has been hammering on it.

I too have seen T5's handle cars in the 10's etc. But if you drive like Jim, it isn't going to last very long.

My next trans is going to be either an auto or an A5.
