I have a 1988 Mustang 5.0 LX.. The problem I'm running into is, When I went to start up the car the starter made a grinding noise and still didn't start, you know, the sound it makes when the car is already running and you accidently turn the key all the way and then you hear that grinding noise, yeah that sound, except the stang wasn't running... Now I already replaced the Ignition switch about 2 months ago or so and Pigtail connector as well.. Starter solinoid was replaced last summer, the starter was replaced 3 years ago.. I'm stumped at the moment, what else should I look for, what could it be, and what should I do.. Thanks for the help guys I appreciate it.
Flywheel is brand spankin new, not even a month old yet and it was in 100% great shape... This issue doesn't always happen.. I'm starting to think I didn't tighten up the bolts for the starter, when I was dropping in a new clutch kit, flywheel and tranny... Could that cause the problem? I'm assuming it would... Let me know guys what you think.. and for those who replied so far, thank you for the info, I appreciate it.
but it could also be what supertukes said, because if it only does it every once and a while then it could be your ring gear because i had the same problem on my truck.
even tho u put a new flywheel in, it still could have a chipped tooth in the ring gear, thats why it may only happen sometimes and not others, i used to have to roll mine while it was in gear to get the flywheel facing the other way so the chipped teeth were facing the other way
its the metal ring thats pressed on the flywheel, where the starter goes into the bellhousing, see the teeth? the metal teeth that run around the outer edge of the flywheel, looks like its all one piece, but thats just pressed on, a machine shop will press a new one on if that one needs it
Damn that sucks... Now that means I have to pull it all out.. just my luck... I greatly appreciate the info guys... Atleast I know that I wont go thru a headache later down the road if the problem isn't taken care of.

Yeah I know what you mean now... I always thought it was just one piece and yes they are cheap, like $19.99 at autozone but I gotta special order it... But before I do I'm going to take the starter out and observe a few things, and see whats up.. I'll keep you all posted.. I'll have to take a look at it tomorrow... Thanks again you guys.
Here is the results from my observation.. It turned out that both bolts were in fact loose.. I went under the car and I could literally wiggle the starter with my hand back and forth.. That of coarse can cause a problem like Ive described in my above post... I know for a fact the bolts didn't back up on there own, I just probably didn't tighten them up all the way, but hey you live and learn, so far so good, no problems since I tightened them up completely.. Thank you all who replied and helped me out, I appreciate it.
Well Sh*t hit the fan Wednesday with the starter it started doing that bull sh*t again... Until yesterday I pulled out the starter and it in fact was chewed up a bit.. I got the chance to inspect the flywheel as well, and the flywheel didn't seem to be effected too bad, there were a few teeth the were a hair shimmed from the starter but it's no cause for concern or in need of replacement.. So I went to VatoZone and got another starter for free as my old one had a lifetime warrentee on it.. So I put the new one in and made DAMN sure the bolts were tight this time and it seems to be running fine now, atleast it better or I'm taking a sledge hammer to the car til theres nothing left of it. LMFAO J/K But thanks again guys for the support.
