Well after realizing that I don't feel like spending a few grand right now on a new shortblock and heads I realized that swapping in a low mialege 5.0 Explorer motor might be my best to replace my stock 170k motor. I was just looking for some input on what I should be paying for one of these motors? Im looking into a complete one with 90k for 600? Also what would I be swapping over from my motor to this? I was told just the accesory brackets and the timing cover and water pump would be all I would need to swap over? Also I do plan on putting some kind of aftermarket cam in as I know the stock explorer cam is all torque without much topend power.

Some of the Explorer engines from 95 to 97 came with either GT40 or GT40P heads . They also came with cobra style intakes . You can tell the difference between the heads by the amount of lines casted into the front of the heads . Three lines is the GT40p and the four lines is GT40 . Also keep in mind if you swap in a more agressive cam that you will have to change the valve springs . The stock Explorer cam is only 420 lift , so the springs won't handle a more aggressive cam change . To make it fit into your stang .... Change the oil pan , timing cover , brackets , pullies , distributor , flywheel , starter, oil filter adapter ( they come with oil coolers ) , motor mounts ..... and you will have to drill and tap the intake for the temperature sensor or air charge sensor I forget which .
Heads: GT40's came from 95-early 97 and they are 3 bar not 4. Then later 97 to 2001 came with GT40P and those are the 4 bar heads. Your dead on about the valve springs though.
Intake manifold: The explorer intake is a cheaper/uglier cast version of the GT40. Explorer/Cobra/GT40 intakes all flow withing 3cfm of each other. 95-early 97 have the passage for internal EGR( only matters to foxbodies). Late 97-2001 have no internal EGR provisions. To keep the AIT sensor you have to drill and tap the number #5 runner. Early intakes have a boss for this late rone's don't. You can also just relocate the AIT sensor to the airbox or air intake. also if you want to keep
Not all have the oil cooler around but most do. You do not have to remove the oil cooler you can use it in your Mustang if you want.

Thanks for the input guys, Im gonna think about this for another day or two and probably offer the guy 500 for the motor as I figure I can sell off the intake that I have laying around ( Cobra) and the Explorer intake and buy the trick flow intake that I really want and probably put a cam and springs in along with the roller rockers I have laying around and have a decent motor for pretty cheap.

Thanks GT stang for correcting my mistake ... I wasn't sure about the line casting's in the heads . It's been about 6 years since I did this swap to my old 86 GT . I also suggested to remove the oil cooler because it didn't fit with my long tubes , but like you stated.. it can be used . My old explorer motor made 274 rwhp with just a B-cam and trick flow street heat intake , 70 mm tb , 24 # inj. , etc.... After I had the heads redone with better springs and mild port work it made 298 rwhp ..

I agree with this overall post... however the GT40 flows far better than the explorer/cobra (these are damn close). As a matter of fact, I'm pretty sure the tubular GT40 flows damn close to the Holley Systemax intake.
The lower is the bottleneck of all three of these EFI intakes. Since they all sit on the exact same lower for any of them to significantly outflow the other would be quite a feat.
Well as it turns out the explorer motor is not happening as my freind called me today to tell me that his freind is trying to sell a 308 ( I knew he was building it just did not know he was selling it and the car it was going to go into) So I will be buying that in a few weeks for 1500 with GT40 heads on it and a milodon oil pan or what ever it is ( the slightly larger one that stock) and should hopefully be getting a trickflow intake for it.
