LA Man Gets Long-Stolen Mustang Back Thu Mar 20, 11:02 PM EDT
LOS ANGELES A Los Angeles man is getting his stolen Mustang back 38 years after it was stolen. The vehicle has an extra 300,000 miles and a different paint job, but Eugene Brakke's 1965 Mustang is evidently running just fine.
Brakke reported the car stolen to Burbank police in May 1970.
One month later, a Long Beach teenager named Judy Smongesky received the car as a high school graduation gift from her father, who had bought it at a Bellflower used car dealer.
Smongesky, who now lives in San Diego, said Thursday she had been driving and maintaining the car for nearly four decades, and only learned that it had been stolen when she recently prepared to sell it. San Diego police verified the car was hot.
"It's his car, even though he had it for four years and I had it for 38," Smongesky said. "He seems like a real nice gentleman, though."
Brakke found out Smongesky had twice rebuilt the engine and painted the Mustang from its old gold color to silver-blue.
"He wasn't too happy with that," Smongesky said.
The pair planned to meet up to transfer the car soon.
"It was hard but it was the right thing to do," Smongesky said. "I haven't really cried yet, but when he drives it away, I think I'll fall apart."

How in the Hell did she register and drive it for all that time and it was never flagged @ the registry . Besides it is'nt fair in my opinion that he would get it back after all these years when most likley he would not have had the car today . He should get fair market value from 1970 and not make out from today's market prices from someone that is as much a victim in this debacle as he is . I mean in 1970 that car was probably worth 1,500. bucks and now depending on condition could be worth as much as 10,000 . Just when ya think you herd it all .......
I see your point ... and sure I would be interested in getting back what I was out of moniterily . Thing is we don't no if he had insurance and he was compansated back in 1970 . What would you do if you hung on to your 03 cobra for 38 years and kept it in mint condition with a alot of money invested in aftermarket parts. Only to find out just as you were about to sell it for a huge some of money that it was stolen and you had to hand it over ? Sure....good for the person that gets their car back , but is it fair that she looses thousands and he was only out hundreds . There are two victims here . Seems like to me that she lost more than he did and thats all I was saying ...
