On the winter solstice in 2012, the sun will be aligned with the center of the Milky Way for the first time in about 26,000 years. This means that "whatever energy typically streams to Earth from the center of the Milky Way will indeed be disrupted on 12/21/12 at 11:11 p.m. Universal Time," Joseph writes.

i was watching something on tv bout this. the Mians callender they made had 12/21/2012 as the last day. they were right about all the wars we had and even natural disasters we had. it was kinda fucked up hearing all this but what can we do. it aint over til its over so we gotta live our lives.

Will it happen? Probably not. I doubt it.

Could it? This alignment WILL happen and noone knows what it will do. Last time it happened was 26k years ago. I'm not sure if the entire planet moves or just the magnetic field. The poles have shifted in the past. NASA has an article on it somewhere. The poles on the Sun shift every 11.5 years like clock work, back and forth.

I find this interesting;

The pole kept going during the 20th century, north at an average speed of 10 km per year, lately accelerating "to 40 km per year," says Newitt. At this rate it will exit North America and reach Siberia in a few decades.

Keeping track of the north magnetic pole is Newitt's job. "We usually go out and check its location once every few years," he says. "We'll have to make more trips now that it is moving so quickly."
