poppin out the intake :(

i did cobra upper and lower intake and bigger throttle body and my timming light says 17 degreees advanced. which i know must be to far consider stock timming is 10degrees, now i didnt mark the distributor comming out but i timmed it brought number 1 up the whole deal and expecially when its cold it pops out the intake, i think its a lean miss fire but i dont know, might be off a tooth? and i am still running speed density. and ideas ?

Sounds like you have a vacume leak. Take some carb cleaner and spray around the upper and lower intakes and see if the idle changes.

Sorry Eddy but, 10* is stock and yes , 12 to 14 is usually a good initial timing setting for better throttle response and some added ponies ...

yes stock is def 10 degress, hey an ihad the same problem u havin,i did heads cam and intake and it was popping out of the intake for lik 2 weeks culdnt figure it out, it was my mass air sensor, once it pops once, its junk, and thats what mike dezotell told me, ik there pricey but i have a strong feeling thas wat ur problem is, ur suckin in alot more air/fuel now, u shuld upgrade ur MAF or even just try replacing it with a oem replacement to see if the popping goes away, hope this helps

If it is efi, u must put the distribut back in the same reference point. Carb #1 can be anywhere u like.

Your off a tooth on your dist.
and your next upgrade should be a MAF conversion.

i used carb cleaner around the upper and lower intake seems to be no idle change, and stupid me didnt mark the dist... so i set #1 a little befor tdc and set base timming but it ran like a bag, so i advanced it till it ran right, acording to the timming light its around 17 degrees advanced, that would explaine the poping i assume, and yeah i deffiantly need mass air, any one know anyone selling one ? 89 direct swap kits ?

Just changing the intake and throttle body on a speed density car should not give you issues like your experiencing . The only thing that can give speed density fits is a change to a bigger cam . This is because the map sensor can't adjust to the lower vacume readings and will cause idle and cruising drivability issues .
On a stock head and cam 5.0 you shouldn't go more than 14 * timing . There just is'nt anymore power to be had with this set up . Keep in mind this is initial timing and NOT advanced .
As far as timing , just make sure you start at top dead center on #1 on the compression stroke and the balancer is set at "0" on the timing tab . Then pop off the dist. cap and see where the rotor is pointing . It should be fairly close to the #1 terminal on the distributor cap . Usually you would start with the rotor pointing at the #1 terminal , but since you advanced the timing already the rotor will be slightly to the left of the #1 terminal .
If this checks out . Then I would make sure you have the firing order correct . You might also want to check the plugs and take a reading and see if it's lean or rich .
The only way it could pop back through the throttle body like your saying is either bad ignition timing or your valves are bad causing the combustion to fire through the intake instead of the exhaust , but this can easily be checked with a compressoin tester .

Well this is my twocents.gif and probably all it's worth .....
