4 cyl spindles to 5.0 spindles

Tired of my garbage 4 cyl rotors...my buddy just got an 88 GT witht he 5.0 Spindles, control arms, rotors and calipers. Im assuming this will be a simple take out and swap? Also the front sway bar should just swap out too correct? And how hard/easy is it? Last thing...will i need to get 5.0 brake hoses to the calipers or will the 4 cyl ones work?

yes you will need 5.0 brake hoese to work with the larger fron 5.0 calipers & you will also need the correct 87-93 brake booster & master cylinder. an alignment will be needed in a major way after because toe-in is gonna be bad! there is more to it than just swapping the rotors & spindles.

It's not as bad as 90saleen is making it out to be. Heres what you will need to change:

-Spindles
-Rotors
-Calipers
-Brake hoses
-The brake hose mounting brackets will be diff between 4cyl &5.0's so you'll need those too
-Struts (4cyl will line up, but theres a little gap between the strut and the spindle that will cause a little slap every time you stop...it gets annoying after a few weeks.)
-4cyl sway bar will work fine
-14" rims will no longer fit, you will need a 15" min rim (don't think its an issue for you)
- if you want to really get technical the 4cyl master cylinder is different from the 5.0's too... but I never bothered to swap that on mine, not a big difference.

Edit:

After its all assembled use a tape measure, and get the steering as close to zero as you can.. I did this and the car drove straight/didn't chop tires for almost 6 months.

.... So I guess it is a little more work then you initially stated, but it really isn't all that bad.

i actually did my own alignment which is mint to this day but not everyone is that crafty to do so that why i said to go to an alignment shop. the booster & master cylinder swap is recommended because of the different fluid requirments of the larger 5.0 front calipers. my car has seen 4 complete different braking systems in the last 10 years & i have learned alot on the way from maximizing the drum braking setup to going to the 93 cobra setup & now to the Saleen/SVO brake & axle setup w/ 73mm calipers in the front & 54MM calipers in the rear. especially when the saftely to you & others on the road is concerned. brakes are nothing to short change on. the spindles w/ front brake setup is fairly straight forward swap but the brake booster was hell on me! i F'n hate doing work under the dash but i knew it had to be done so i did it.

I forgot about the booster... the best part is that I replaced the booster, but didn't replace the master cylinder (mine looked like it had been replaced). Once you get used to being upside down under the dash, it was a fairly straight forward swap.

Ok thanks guys...appreciate the input...still gonna do it...just might wait to install until i buy new booster and master cyl and struts...would it be worth it to get aftermarket front control arms while im in there already? might as well get some drilled/slotted rotor and nice pads too lol...thanks again

check Ebay. you can get a used booster with the master still on it as an assy. for like 25.00 with a few bucks shipping. good deals there. if you have any more questions just ask away.
this is my complete brake setup: i use the stock 5.0 booster with the SVO/Saleen master cylinder, 3-2 port front brake line conversion, gutted factory proportioning valve w/ FMS plug, SSBC adjustable brake proportioning valve, SVO 73MM front calipers, SVO 5 lug front rotors, SVO 5 lug rear disc brake setup w/ SVO/Saleen axles & 54mm calipers. it stops well, smile.gif especially better than when my car still had all its 4 cylinder brakes.

Can't you use Spindles from a SN95 chassis? I thought that those were spec on the 1993 Cobra R. Bigger brakes and a wide range of choices for future changes.

now that I think of it, I think I actually have a brake booster off an 86' GT, but Id have to look to see if its worth your time.
