5.4 MOTOR HELP

may be buying a 2000 lightning tomorrow with a rod sticking out the side of the motor ...my question is whats the best route for me to go so i can have some fun with the truck and not be worried about it blowing up

i hear navigator bottom ends are a small upgrade but i also hear the rods dont like the boost

my stock block with an off the shelf tune put down 400/500 at the wheels and held together no problems ..if i sent the chip back i could have had more power and never had one problem ....as soon as the young kid bought it out blasting around in oct/NOV blew a plug right out of the head ...

not sure how much power you want to put through it but it can be done safely

04 lightning dyno 303 at the tire.....380 at crank...all stock.......out of sportruck mag

The conrods and the crank are exactly the same as in the normal 260 hp 5.4L V8.

Just as in other 5.4's, the conrods are forged and fracture-split to ensure a more precise fit onto the crank. Here's a copy from Motor Trend when they first tested the 1999 L:

"The heart and soul of the Lightning is its supercharged 5.4-liter SOHC V-8. Compared to other Tritons, it boasts new forged pistons (to handle the elevated combustion pressures and drop static compression ratio), new intake tract (including new manifold and big-bore throttle body), water-to-air intercooler, and the all-important Eaton Roots-type supercharger."

"One of the more impressive aspects of this engine is how few modifications were made to handle the extra 100 horses.) The only internal changes were unique forged pistons and stronger wrist pins. The piston change drops the compression ratio from 9.5 to 8.4. Virtually everything else is stock, including rods, crank, block, and front cover. Even the stock cast-iron exhaust manifolds were used. Steel headers were tried but proved too "noisy"-too bad. The rest of the exhaust system consists of a California-calibrated catalytic converter and a single high-flow muffler plumbed with dual stainless steel pipes to just ahead of the right rear tire."

they can handle boost the navi motors i know of one thats getting 20lbs pushed through the motor and as a stock motor its taking a beating....the lightning pistons suck...i like the navi motors because of higher comperssion which these motors can still handle with the small amount of boost that the eaton will pull out...obviously you need to use the lightning cover and heads ect because the navi is DOHC instead of single good luck steve which ever choice you do...gonna be a fun little truck
