1997 GT needing more power!

Hey i was wondering what the cheapest way to make my car faster excluding nitrous? I ran my car today for the first time and it ran a 14.9 at 91 mph. Thanks

Sell your car and buy a cobra. If thats not a possibility then put a turbo or blower on it. You can do that PI head swap, but the labor would be costly for that swap and you wouldn't gain the power you would from a power adder.

Weight reduction, gears and suspension will help make better use of the power your car has now. If not then a power adder is the way to go.

You gotta do a PI swap. You wont be happy until you do. Unless you supercharge it of course.

You can get a complete Vortech kit for under $2000 if you buy a used head unit and you can buy all the brackets, etc new. There is a thread on SVT Performance on how to do it. The auto is hurting that car too. 4.10's will help it out. Underdrive pulleys are useless and so are cold air kits. Save the money on those and do a blower instead. PI head swap is costly for install so if you were doing a lower end of something that would require to be pulled then its worth it.

Cobra motor swap isn't a bad idea either.

i agree with them jeff the 4.10's are way better for the auto, we can put a turbo kit on it this winter from ON3 performance, kits are like 1800 and then the supporting mods

I had a 98 GT with a 5 speed, 4.10's, full exhaust, short shifter, K&N and pulleys and went 14.4 (4 straight runs)with it....I was very disappointed. Took it to the dealership and traded back a year to a 97 Cobra. Took it straight to the track bone stock down to the Motorcraft filter and ran a 13.7 @ 103. So although I hate agreeing with OG a Cobra is a much better platform to start with.

As for making the car faster, the PI swap can and will get you into the low 14's MAYBE high 13's as it sits. Other than that you can get a brand new Vortech installed at a local shop for about 3k which will obviously boost the power for you. Just keep in mind that those 96-98 GT heads are anemic and will hold you back regardless of what else you do to that car. You could always utilize what you have and put a nice torque convertor and shift kit in that AOD-E and that'll knock a few tenths off on it's own.

cheapest way would be a 100 hot of nos........you can find a used wet kit which is safer than a dry for around 3-400 bucks.....wet kit adds fuel to the nos when injected......this is the cheapest way and with an auto would work the best for the money......
