Well I just talked to my buddy Dave I'm positive that it's the rear main and he looked into it and said the 85 has a 2 piece rear main seal so I have to pull the crank shaft out he's positive of this because my car has the OLD firing order Im screwed he said he'll charge 400 for labor not including parts is thAt a fair price?

85 mustang 5.0 is the same 1 piece rear main as the 86+

1983-1995 5.0 have the 1 piece rear main. Actually late 82 was when the changer from 2 piece to 1 piece was made.

I have installed a rms on an 85 long block I installed in a 1988 efi setup. Pulled the engine out of the 85 and installed the rear main seal myself. Was def a 1 piece.

You should also have the new 351 firing order as well, 1985 was the first year from this.

So if you have the old firing order and a 2 piece rear main seal then you don't have an original engine and I have no clue what you have.

that happened to me, I was blowing the pcv out with boost- oil everywhere and I thought it was the rear main at first glance

I'm going to take a second look at the block and get some #s idk why I have an old firing order when I bought it was told it was a 306 never has chance to pull apart yet so can't b positiver idk if block is original or switched can't really get pics to load up I don't use a computer only an iPhone I'll check the intake and the pcv an see if that's what it is has been leaking for a while I do know that my bell housing and tranny have a nice crack which I figured was due to motor mounts and tranny mount which has cracked straight through them both

You would need to find the block casting numbers. They are in the area right above the starter. If you pull the pass front wheel, you might be able to see them with a mirror and bright light unless it's coated in grime

Get those and you can find out what motor you have.

This thread shows you were they are

Thanks mustang5l5 I've already pulled the trans out gonna pull bellhousing off tommorrow and prob clutch and flywheel do I have to use something to keep the flywheel still when I losen the bolts?

Either put a wrench on the harmonic balancer bolt or I have used a double closed box wrench with one bell housing bolt in the block and one bolt where the clutch bolts on. Just make sure if you do that you use a long bolt that goes all the way through the flywheel or you risk stripping it

I'll prob do it off the balancer then don't wanna risk nething so I just pull flywheel off then there is some kind of cover that is rtv sealed correct? And then I understand that the main seal will b there and I'm guessing when I pull it out of it's 2 pieces it's obviouly not a 1 piece

it should be one piece right behind the center of the flywheel use a pic or small flat head to pull it out shouldn't be any silicone. there is a flywheel tool i use to hold the flywheel in place or use an impact gun if u have air tools

Make sure when you pry it out you don't nick the crank with the screwdriver.

To install the new one, i used a 4" PVC pipe plug from Home depot to tap it in evenly.

(on the right)

It fits perfectly and costs $2
