Whining Tranny

My step sister just bought a 90 Fox GT....I saw it yesterday for the first time and the Tranny whines really bad. Or it sounds like an airplane in and outside fox while it is driving. I am going to change fluid next weekend

Any suggestions or Fixes???

George

almost forgot it has an aftermarket shifter and I know some people have had a problem with noise. But I am thinking it is not from this.

the tranny in my buddys 96 cobra whines a lot too. kinda sounds like its supercharged lol. but it works just fine and he beats the crap out of that car. its just how the gears are meshing. but t-5s are generally cheap and are easy to swap if it really irritates her

If the fluid change doesn't fix it and it's not the shifter, it's prob a scored mainshaft....caused by running low on trans fluid and overheating the pocket bearing. If it goes 100% silent in 4th gear, then it's definitely this. I've rebuilt a T-5 with the same symptoms.

If she doesn't want to live with it, we can swap in the spare T-5 I have and i'll rebuild her's for cost of parts. I can prob snag a mainshaft for under $100 and have the pocket roller bearings already. Figure $150 more if she wants to replace the synchros while I'm there. The PITA part is removing the trans when they don't have the right tools down there.

Def check the fluid though. I'm concerned you are gonna remove the bottom plug and 1/2 a quart is going to come out due to a leaking tailshaft seal that went overlooked. Seen it happen. If you refill it with the 2.8 quarts and confirm the trans isn't leaking, then it should still hold up fine...while just being overly annoying.....in otherwords it should last til next spring/summer if you want to do a trans R&R

We ended up putting my spare t 5 in the op's car. When I took it apart, it was definitely messed up. Case was cracked causing it to leak fluid. Input shaft was busted, mainshaft scored to helll, and every gear mashed to he'll. It's only good for parts...and not that many are still good

It's the main shaft on them alot of beat to shit t5s do it even after a rebuild it'll start off quiet then get louder and louder like a supercharger but yet they can hold up to a beating for a long time I've had 2 or 3 do it so far same as my brother 88mustanggt on here no worries if u were not gonna replace it

Well, I ended up machining the tip of the mainshaft to convert it to the 1993 cobra style pocket bearing in the future. It's a stronger design than the 15 roller bearing setup. But I am lazy so this rebuild might take me 3 years lol
