i just picked up a 98 gt with a blown head gasket. i was told that in these motors if the car sits for a while with a blown head gasket i might as well just buy a new motor. is this true. can i just replace the head gasket and be fine or should i do a motor swap. if you think motor swap anyone know where i can find one cheep. can i put a different motor in it and still pass insection/emissions. thanks guys
all depends if fluid has been sitting in the cylinders throw some mystery oil down the plugs and let sit then when you pull the heads you will know if it is junk has the motor been running???

this was my cousins car. i watched it pull in the driveway sputtering and driving like absolute shit about 6 monthes ago. its sat in that same spot for the last 6 months. never been started up since.
Why do you think the head gasket is bad ? If thats the case ... you should have the heads checked for plain if you do the gaskets . You will no if the motor is junk when you take it apart . The other option would be a 99 to 04 P.I. 4.6 . You would just need a flash tune or chip to make the ECU happy with the new engine and there would be no problem with the emissions .
yeah i was thinking of going to a pi head. i heard they have more power than the ones i have now. but i just assumed the antifreeze and water would have gone into the cylinders and fucked them up. i wasnt sure if i could put like a 99-04 motor or not. or if i put a 5.0 in it if it would pass emissions. id really like to go with a newer style 4.6 with the pi heads. like 03 or something.
Forget the 5.0 unless it will be strictly a race car . IF you have yet to take a 4.6 apart and put it back together .... FInd someone that has , they are nothing like pushrod motors . If it were me .... I'd get the newer P.I. 4.6 and drop it right in .
99 and up motor is the way to go. All the work to do headgaskets and you could just drop in a new motor w/ better parts from the factory. You can even get 99-01 cobra motors cheap now, maybe $2000 complete with wiring harness. It may be worth it for you in the long run.
does anyone know what a 4.6 romeo built motor is. i found one for sale but not sure if it will work for me. cause im looking for a motor that will still pass insection.
