explorer gears in a mustang??

Im just trying to get some feedback on this.... Ive got 4:10s now and want to go 3:73s but cash is tight. I work in a salvage yard and can get a gear set from a newer explorer w an 8.8 for next to nothing! My question is, do i need to change the pinion shim thats on it now? If im correct (might not be though) ford used the same "master housing demensions" on all the 8.8 rears so I should be able to just install the pinion w a new crush sleeve and put the ring gear on my carrier and set the backlash and check the runout...I think.

I set up the gears in my toyota w no problems but the stang didnt work out so well! They whine/vibrate like crazy!

I plan on going through the rear at a later date when i have the cash but for now im looking for a cheap fix so it doesnt blow up on me on the highway!!

used gears really isn't the way to go they are harder to set up and may end up costing you more money in the long run ..........just my two cents

the junkyard you work at must have a mustang rear end just swap a complete rear end in it

The pinion shim is not the same. Every rearend is different they are normally close but my opinion is you should get a pinioin depth reading on it but if all else fails use the shim that is in the car already that should get you close enough. As far as the lash goes, that probably will change. Best of luck to you. Kevin

I was kinda hopping i could just throw it there but it doesnt seem that way.

when i set the 4:10s up I used a master housing demention that i found online to get the pinion depth, long story short 2 trys and its still not right! I think i just need to get a pinion depth setting tool and do it the right way! I have all the other tools but that one.

Thanks kevin thats the kind of answer i was looking for.
