I think it's a U-Joint, but I want more opinions before I go ripping it apart. When I am on the highway, it has a slight vibration, but when I decel, you can really feel it. Then when I get back on the gas, it 'clunks' a bit, not audible, but I can feel the 'bump'. This is in the Explorer, AWD.
doubt your going to find any play in the pinion . if its an explorer 02 or newer with awd. its most likey your u joints. and also big issues are the slip joint or yoke that goes into the trans. you will have to un bolt it and use a puller to remove it from the trans. and on the spline put teflon grease on them. and reinstall.
If it is a pinion concern. when you tip in on the gas at 40mph or 50mph you will hear a humm noise for a little.
another thing I always see is transfer cases binding up cause by dirty fluid. you will have to change it and drive it a few times and keep changing it until vibration is gone. But that would feel more like a binging feeling and will cause banging noises.
also check and make sure the tires are not worn out more than 1" of each other. that will cause a vibration on those vehicles. you can check that by measuring around the center of the tires with a tape measure.

Yeah,it's an '04. I'll be sure to grease the yoke (hehe). I got a bunch of Mercon V for the trans, I need to get some stuff for the diffs and xfer case too.
