I finally got all the parts i needed and installed them. New head gaskets, upper and lower intake water pump, and headers. I just got it all 2gether about 20 min ago and when the car starts its knocking and shaking like a bastard. any ideas on whats up with it
i had tremendous problems with the ditributor dropping in....i had # 1 at top but it still was fucked.....it took me 3 trys to get it right....watch out tho dont keep cranking it one serious missfire will do what i did to my car and that was blow the cyl bolt right out of the block and warp the head as well.....i made sure the second time around i droped the ditributor in a TDC of the compresion stroke on cyl 1
ya I pulled the intake around the distributor.....
when I was taking everything apart I tried to stop any extra cooland from gettin in the engine with a shop vac. so hopefully there wasnt that much in there.
And ya I changed the oil......its shakin really bad, i dont think its a vac leak...but thats just me thinkin
ya i tried drivin it up the street and it has no power. The car has gears and shit in it but it seems like it would take 15 sec to get to 60....it has nuthin when i romp on it
well if you cant find any mechanical problems like vac leak or firing order issues check your engine management components such as MAF EGR TPS all the connections you touched check and make sure none of the pigtails are damaged and that the prongs on the plugs on both sides are making contact when plugging in...if it ran good before being pulled apart and now it doesn't something must be off also try a compression test...hope this helped good luck
funny my buddy just called me about this saw it for sale ....let me know the outcome cause he is interested in it but if it has a blown motor he wont offer ya much ...where in braintree is the car located ??
when you pulled the lower intake off was your distributer cap on or off? you may have gotten coolant down in the dis when you pulled the intake off. also did you tear down the heads to inspect them before you installed them, if not you could have some burnt valved. hey gtstang is that on elm street by the reservoir?
Don't let anyone take advantage of your situation !! IF some one is trying to swoop in on you like a vulture going after dead prey .. tell em to beat it !! Cuz they will tell you it's all srewed up ... take it home and fix it on the cheap and then sell it for an easy profit !!
Two things ... While you have the correct firing order ... the order is in a counter clockwise rotation and cylinders 1 through 4 are on the passengers side.. 5 through 8 is on the drivers side . Make sure you have the #1 starting on the correct terminal on the cap . You can check this by pulling the #1 plug and rotating the engine over till you get to zero on the balancer . Pull the passenger valve cover and make sure bolth intake and exaust valves are not being pushed down by the rockers on the #1 cylinder. This will be TDC on the compression stroke . Then pop the distibutor cap and make sure you have the #1 spark plug wire on the terminal that the rotor is now pointing at . This should be where #1 starts .
If this checks out ... now that you have the valve cover off . Make sure that the valve springs are not being compressed ..even slightly.. when the valves are in the fully closed position . I know that others told you that you can just torque the rockers down to 25ft #'s . However you should always do the correct procedure for valve lash adjustment regardless !! You might have to much preload on the lifters and thus ... holding the valves open slightly and causing loss of compression .. This is most likley why your car has no power and is making popping noises .
To adjust the rockers ..... Loosen the rocker bolts ... then retighten the bolt while simultaneously spinning the pushrod between your fingers . When you feel the pushrod stop ... this is zero lash !! At this point put your ratchet in a 12 o clock position and tighten to spec . You should not go more than 1 full turn . All the while watching to make sure that your not compressing the valve spring . IF it goes beyond 1 turn then you will have to shim the rocker .
Did you get the problem sorted out? Once I saw you had probs with dist, It pretty much sounds like you have dist in 180 deg off. There's only 2 ways to drop it in, dead on, 180 off. Did the cap go on as is should?....if not thats proof positive that dist is the culprit. Other then that it could be a fuel prob.....let us know either way!
