When I start my car most of the time there is a rattle/ knocking/ticking noise within the engine but it will go away by the time you count to 3. I can't figure out what it may be. It only happens sometimes when i start it, along with that it doesnt always start the click of the key like it used too a few months ago. Other then this the car is perfect. I drive this every day and i am almost positive it happens on warm and cold starts. I will play with it tomorow and try to figure more out. Any ideas? Any help would be great.
How many miles ? What kind of oil and weight do you use ? Did it always do this or did it just start ? What grade of gasoline do you use ?
It could be a valve lash adjuster bleeding down when the engine is off . It could also be one of the chain tensioners bleeding off aswell .... So when you restart .. it takes a couple of seconds to pump back up and readjust . Like already mentioned ..... It is an unfortunate and annoying noise that these 4.6's make . My 04 explorer has the 4.6 and it to has a knock upon start for a second and then cleans up to a small tick . My 06 f-150 did the same thing , but the tick was kind of loud in that one . I took it to the dealer under warranty and they said that it was a loud injector .... Soo I said" fix it !!" .... the response was ... " thats how they all are and ford won't fix it , untill it fails " !! But see if you can have someone listen under the hood upon start up and try and track down exactly the area it is coming from .
thanks for the info everyone!. It is tuned with the predator tuner. I run 93 octane in it. I use the oil it calls for on the cap(sorry i forget what weight it is) This didnt just start its been doing it for a while, but it only happens now and then. I will mess around with it today and see if i can figure anything out. Ill let you know!
You could always put on a louder exhaust .... Then you won't hear the tick any more ! I wouldn't worry about it ... they all make a tick or occasional knocking noise .
Yes you did ahah. Thanks for the input guys. yeah i cant wait to get the money for an exhaust!. I am going to just let it happen. it doesnt happen much and its not a loud noise. If I want to get rid of it i know how but the the rattle live!
