ya so after about 4-5 months of dicking around, my bro decided he wanted to junk his 86 gt wich is hacked to shit and converted to a 87+ style front end..the thing is FUBAR if u will....the wiring is a complete nightmare....the body isnt in bad shape..but needs work...anyways, rather than waste his time and money...we are goin to take his solid drivetrain out of his 86 and put it a mint or close to mint 4cylinder..he hasnt bought the car yet but i was wondering is there anything special i need to know when im doing this...as far as i know...i cant see anything that is gona need special attention...he plans on buying a 5spd car so we dont have to change the pedals and shit..anyways, any parts, info, or leads u might have on sum nice 4cylinders, or even a nice 5.0 shell....let me know asap....he prefers a 4cylinder so he can drive it all winter...anyways, all tips are helpful thank you

Don't the V8 fuel lines run on the opposite side as the 4 cyl do? Braided line would be easier, but its also gonna cost more. You can buy some lines from Ford already pre bent ready to install. The fuel lines really aren't that big of a deal to do. You just gotta bend them properly.
ya they do run on the opposite side, but we're running a mechanical fuel pump on it anyway.....either way, we'll figure somethin out...how will a 7.5 rear end last on a mild 302....no heads, just cam, intake and nice carb...anyone know???? probly about 230-250rwhp....wat are the 7.5'w rated at like 120hp haha? were not keeping it, but he might just run the rear end it till it dies, then put his 8.8 in it...or is it even worth the trouble of blowing up the 7.5 1st

DON'T RUN a 7.5 rear with ANY 302. my buddy ran a stock 302 through a 7.5 and it was howling, broke out the limited slip, and he drove it like 20 miles maybe. dont do it!
ya thats wat i was thinking, i think hes gonna do it on his weeks vacation next yr so we will have plenty of time to swap rear ends...and pat u can run a 7.5 on a stock 302, it would hold up fine if u dont beat on it and dont launch it to hard....but who wants a wimpy rear end like that, it belongs in in a ford ranger or something gay....

haha, i wouldnt try it! my buddys car was fucked cause of the 7.5 rear, but all he did was switch the motor and tranny, everything else was left alone. that car was fucked.
i can give you alot more info about this since i have done it but i need to know the year of car all the parts are going in & whether its carb or EFI. i built a complete 1988 Saleen Mustang reporduction out of my 4 cylinder conversion car including body kit, wing, decals/emblems, Saleen/Racecraft suspension, Saleen FloFit interior, Saleen/SVO 4 wheel 5 lug disc setup, 87-88 Saleen mesh wheels & much more! mine is clearly the 4 cyl conversion gone out of control LOL!

its an 86 GT but the front end is off an 89....the motor is the factory 86 EFI roller motor that we converted to carburation after months of hunting down wiring problems w. the efi shit....a t-5, not shure wat year...and a 8.8 rear end that came int he 86....so it will be carbed, im not shure if the car hes buyin is gonna be a 5spd already but we can just snag the pedal cluster out of his car....the fuel lines are not a problem becuse hes gonna be using a mechanical pump or a electric inline pump...i can see reallly anything else we wil have a problem with...we're probly gonna keep the 4cyl springs in it at 1st, cuz thats what i havei n my car and i love them, good wieght transfer

The stock 86' motor is a non h.o motor thet come with a very mild cam. Of course you can always change the cam but the problem you run into there is the 86 motor has flat top pistons with small cc heads. So you might have valve clearance issues. The 87-95 h.o motors come stock with trw forged pistons they also have the much better flowing e7 heads. Another difference not that this matters to you is the motors cam with smaller throttle bodys .
MY BUDDY TOTALED HIS CAR LAST NIGHT, THE 86 GT....SO WE NEED A 4CYL STAT..OTHERWISE HES BUYIN A BEATER FOR WINTER AND WAITIN TILL SPRING...HIS BRAKES WENT COMIN AROUND A CORNER AND HE HIT SAND..BOOM, DONESKI...BUT WE WILL BE BUILDING A SICKBOY 4CYL CONVERISON OR HE JUST MIGHT BUY A NICE 5.0 LX IN THE SPRING....AS FOR THE 86 MOTOR SPECS, IM AWARE OF THAT , I HAD AN 86 AND FINDING OUT ABOUT THE FLAT TOP PISTONS IS HE REASON I SOLD MINE....WE'RE NOT SHURE ITS AN 86 MOTOR...BUT ABNOUT 85% SHURE...THANKS GUYS....ANY MORE INFO IS APPRECAITTED I CANT SPELL

there are a few on craigslist. one is in warwick RI, total POS for $1000 w/ red interior and the top end off the motor. Rotted floor, beat up LT quarter and heavy rust/slight rot on the front inner structure. Doors are junk too. Don't be fooled by this one if you see it, trust me its a waste of time. My buddy just picked a clean 4 cyl from germantown for $600. They are out there if you look. Just don't get discouraged and don't overpay!!!!
Here is the link. http://providence.craigslist.org/car/407168457.html

Incorrect statement re: pistons...92 was the last year of forged pistons on HO motor.

The statments made by Reef and 90 saleen are correct . Frank the only thing wrong with the 86 engine was the anemic one year experimental heads that ford used in 86 . Other wise the roller cam and Bottom end is the same from 85 to 92 . Except that Ford did not put valve reliefs in the 86 pistons . You can use E7 heads and any after market head as long as you don't go over 510 " lift with an after market cam . The good thing is with the 86 pistons you will have an increase in compression over the newer 87 up 302 when using the E7 or aftermarket head of similar cc . My advice with any cam change is to check P.T.V. contact with any cam over 500." lift . This is my
oh ik there right...the heads are junk...then bottom end is not an 86 bottom end as we took the headss off it last night....its got valve reliefs in the pistons...so idk if sum1 rebuilt it with differnt pistons or its a 87+ or pre 85 block...but anyways we wil be doin this project all winter, along with my on going project a.k.a the money pit...im shure all of u can relate your cars to money pits...anyways thanks for the input guys definalty apprectiate it.

the 4 cylinder front K member has a smaller wheel track making the front wheels look more "tucked" under the front fenders just like my 1988 4 cylinder conversion.
